Sealant on gasket under tub Author: richb2599 (AZ)Ok, I've searched and read dozens of posts but have not found the answer to this question. Is there a benefit to puting silicone sealant between the tub drain Rubber Gasket and the underside of the tub? Same question for the tapered rubber gasket for the overflow?
No, unless you have a desire to glue it in place. Metal waste & overflows do not need any sealant on the bottom side of the tub. Plumbers putty on top. Plastic drains I don't use because they are junk and if they are used should be glued in place with silicone and if your lucky it won't leak.
Packy I'm surprised that your state making you not use slip joints under a kitchen sink would let you use that junk under a tub! Some things don't make sense!

yes there is a benifit. a leak free connection being the primary benifit.
given that tub drains are metal, there is not as much benifit as using silicone on a pop-up drain for a lav that is plastic.
while it is generally agreed that the plastic pop-up assemblies should be tossed and replaced with metal, american standard has changed to cable driven pop-ups that are plastic. the pop-up rod must be changed as well and that sometimes is decorative and not so easily done.
I do everything possible to not get anything between the gasket and the tub. It WILL cause the gasket to slide out when tightening the shoe strainer. It is vital to keep the gasket and the tub dry so friction will stop it from sliding and allow it to compress.

so, to summarize.. we have one vote for putty, one for silicone, 3 for nothing and one for fagheddaboodit. one more each and it would be unanimous.
Actually only one vote for putting silicone on the rubber gasket everyone else said dry!

Putty or silicone under the strainer, who cares. That's not where the seal is made. The thick rubber gasket is where the magic happens. Putty or silicone getting under there will mess that up just the same.
