Product Description:

Double Twisted Hexagonal Mesh Gabions & Reno Mattresses are commonly used as slope stabilization on steep hillsides, channel linings, bridge protection, revetment mats, sea walls, soil retention, riverbank erosion control, river training, weirs, as a foundation under gabion baskets and other applications.

Gabion Mattresses, also known as Reno Mattresses are gabion products that are similar in construction to gabion baskets except that these units are relatively wider, with less depth than standard gabions. Reno Mattresses can be used on projects where less depth and more surface area protection is required. They come manufactured in double twisted hexagonal woven types or rigid welded types, in both galvanized steel wire mesh and PVC coated wires, which is often used for longer life in water or aggressive environments.

Gabions verses Mattresses

Reno Mattresses are compartmented baskets with a rectangular mattress shape and are available in various sizes and dimensions. They contain internal diaphragms that are filled on the job site with stone and linked together, thus creating a strong, permeable, flexible earth retention structure. The compartment or cells of the reno mattress are of equal size and dimension and are formed by internal diaphragms being placed within the basket providing even distribution of the stone fill throughout the mattress, even after structural movement. Even distribution of the stone fill ensures that the reno mattress maintains intimate contact with the foundation soil.

Different Wire Types &#; Woven Wire or Welded Wire

Woven Wire

     Woven Wire Mattress

Woven Wire Gabion Baskets and Reno Mattresses are manufactured from heavy gauge double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh. The heavy gauge woven wire provides reinforcement along the edges, while the flexible structure allows them to twist and conform to the changes in the land.

GALVANIZED Woven Wire Gabion Basket

Double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh which is galvanized zinc coated prior to being double-twisted into mesh. The fasteners and lacing wire also consist of the same zinc coated wire.

Consider using a galvanized woven wire gabion basket or reno mattress under the following circumstances:

  • Dry conditions, not submerged below water level
  • Non-corrosive soil or water applications

PVC COATED Woven Wire Gabion Basket

Double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh made from the same steel galvanized zinc coated wire with an additional Poly Vinyl Coating (PVC). The fasteners are also stainless steel and the lacing wire is the same PVC coating as the mesh.

Consider using a PVC woven wire gabion basket or reno mattress under the following circumstances:

  • Wet conditions, submerged below water level

  • Use in corrosive soil or water applications

Welded Wire

Welded Wire Image

Welded Wire Gabion Baskets and Reno Mattresses offer the same flexibility as twisted mesh gabions but with greater strength and resistance to corrosion. Their structures are more rigid so that they retain their shape easier even when filled with heavy stones.

GALVANIZED Welded Wire Gabion Baskets

Manufactured from galvanized steel wire that is welded into uniform square sections. Wire for fabrication and assembly shall be hot-dipped and galvanized as well.

Consider using a galvanized welded wire gabion basket or reno mattress under the following circumstances:

  • Dry conditions, not submerged below water level
  • Non-corrosive soil or water applications

PVC COATED Welded Wire Gabion Baskets

Manufactured from galvanized steel wire that is coated by fusion bonded PVC material.  Wire for fabrication and assembly receive the same fusion bonded PVC coating.

Consider using a PVC coated welded wire gabion basket or reno mattress under the following circumstances:

  • Wet conditions, submerged below water level
  • Use in corrosive soil or water applications

Advantages of Gabions and Reno Mattresses:

Environmentally Friendly:

Gabions and Reno mattresses are environmentally friendly products. The blending of gabion and Reno mattress structures into the environment is rapid and pleasing. The voids in the rockfill become progressively filled with silt, promoting vegetation growth which is essential to the preservation and maintenance of the ecological balance of the surrounding environment.

Flexibility:

The woven mesh system has the capability of withstanding unexpected and /or localized stresses due to ground settlements and scour by deflection while maintaining its structural integrity.

Permeability:

The stone fill allows the water to seep through the structure while retaining the soil, therefore no additional drainage is required to relieve the hydrostatic pressures.

Easy Installation:

Gabions and Reno mattresses construction does not require skilled labor because they are very easy to build. Standard construction equipment can be used. Structures can be built in stages, if necessary, and baskets can be prefilled and launched to enable the installation under water.

Other advantages offered by double twisted mesh gabions & reno mattresses include:

  • durability
  • strength
  • ecology
  • reliability
  • longevity
  • low cost
  • aesthetic appearance

Products that can withstand environmental stresses such as channel or foundation shifts, soil pressure and impact of high velocity waves are essential to the success of a project.  Due to the flexibility of the wire, the gabion baskets and Reno mattresses settle, twist and conform to the changes in the land.  In addition, the strength of the wire contains the fill material while resisting the pressures put upon them. Consider using a geotextile as a separation layer or inside to reduce the amount of fill.  Vegetating gabion baskets and Reno mattresses also makes them a good choice for bioengineering projects.

Overview of Their Applications:

  • Mass gravity retaining structures
  • Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls
  • Vegetated slope reinforcement
  • Slope stabilization
  • Slope reinforcement
  • Channel lining and channel relocation
  • Slope and bank protection
  • Shore and stream bank protection
  • Weirs, groins, and jetties
  • Drop structures
  • Culvert outlet scour pads and headwalls
  • Bridge abutments
  • Erosion control

Gabion Rock Mattresses, Revet Mattresses, Marine ...

Gabion Mattresses are wire mesh containers to be filled with rocks to form a solid lining system in various soil retaining projects. Gabion Mattress is jumbo size gabion form with increased panel length and width, compared with other forms like baskets, boxes, cages. Wire mattress has comparatively less height to suit its mat application in large bank area. Mattress gabions are flexible bank protection system with base, sides and ends normally formed a single panel of mesh fabric. Mesh form for mattress box is flexible woven wire hexagonal netting.

Finishes of gabion mattress are hot dipped galvanized, pvc coated and galfan galvanized.

Why gabion mattresses?
Mattresses are uniformly partitioned, supplied in variable size;
Mesh mat can form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures easily;
Mattresses are relatively small in height in relation to the lateral dimension of a gabion basket;
Gabion mattresses are suitable for channel linings, revetments and weirs for earth retention.

Gabion Mattresses are usually used with geo draining fabric

Riprap Linings design with gabion mattresses

For riprap linings, the ability to deliver the expected channel protection depends on the proper installation of the lining. Additional design considerations for gabion linings include consideration of the wire mesh; freeboard; proper specification of gradation and thickness; and use of a filter material under the gabions.

The design procedure for gabions riprap is as follows:

Step 1. Determine channel slope, channel shape, and design discharge.

Step 2. Select a trial mattress thickness and fill rock, based on available sizes for the project.
Step 3, Determine specific weight of proposed stone.
Step 4. Estimate the depth.
